James Lepock
1948-2005
James Lepock was an innovative, energetic and loyal member of the society who passed away suddenly in 2005 due to complications associated with a cerebral hemorrhage. Jim was well liked by everyone and he was highly respected for his research on the cell biology and physics of hyperthermia. His pioneering research led to the application of quantitative methods to the identification of cellular targets of hyperthermia, and his publications remain highly influential in the field.
At the time of his death, Jim was Chairman of Biomedical Physics at the University of Toronto and, prior to that, served many years as Chairman of the Physics Department at the University of Waterloo. He also served for many years as an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Hyperthermia. Besides being a productive and influential scientist and an effective administrator, Jim was also a wonderful and influential teacher. He enjoyed teaching students of all levels, but had a particular fondness for working with and teaching graduate students. Jim really excelled in one-to-one relationships with his students, which allowed him to produce a large number of successful masters and PhD candidates.
Because of Jim's devotion to the training of students and young investigators, his colleagues in the Society for Thermal Medicine created the James Lepock Memorial Fund in 2006 which is used primarily to fund Travel Awards for graduate students and new investigators to attend the annual meeting of the Society. The Governing Council acts as a steward for the James Lepock Memorial Fund.
Please consider making a contribution to the James Lepock Memorial Fund in the support of the general activities of the Society for Thermal Medicine. Your donations help fund many worth while programs, including the New Investigator Travel Awards.
Contributions are tax deductible and are very much appreciated. Most donations are typically $25, $50 or $100, but larger donations are appreciated and can be made by combining mulitple donations in your cart. If you wish to make a contribution by phone, fax, or mail, please contact the us at the Society for Thermal Medicine Business Office at 785-865-9404.
